General Population of Women

As of July 2014 the female population at York Correctional Institution is 1,130. Females comprised 6.7% of the 201state and federal prisoner population. Black females were imprisoned at between 2 and 3 times the rate of white females, while Hispanic females were imprisoned at between 1 and 3 times the rate of white. The female inmate population increased 10.9% (up 10,000 inmates) between mid-year 2010-2013, while the male population declined 4.2% (down 27,500 inmates). 37% of women inmates reported earning less than $600 month before incarceration. Average daily cost is approximately $95.16 per inmate.

Womens Mental and Physical health

Nearly 6 in 10 women in state prisons had experienced physical or sexual abuse in the past. 69 percent reported that the assault occurred before age 18. Between 1991-2011 the number of females admitted to state prison for newly committed violent offenses increased 83 percent. 8 out of 10 female offenders with a mental health illness report having been physically or sexually abused. 22 percent of women in U.S. jails had been diagnosed with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD)

Women and Children

73% of family violence victims were female. 7 in 10 women under correctional sanction have minor children. On every measure of drug use, women offenders in state prison reported higher usage (40%) compare to male (32%).
